Originally from Preston, Lancashire, I have travelled extensively around the world and lived in many different places in the UK and abroad. I have spent the last 17 years living a stone's throw away from the beautiful Gower Peninsular in Wales which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Gower Peninsula is a great source of inspiration for many of my artworks.
All of my drawings and paintings are inspired by nature. I've always loved animals and they are my favourite subject to draw and paint. I particularly love drawing owls, hares, foxes, badgers and other woodland creatures. I also love drawing and painting flowers, meadows, the moon and trees, especially twisted, gnarled and ancient trees. I have always spent as much time as possible in nature. I like to create art in nature whenever I can. I am also passionate about nature photography too and I love to photograph animals in their natural habitat. Some examples of my nature photography can be found on the photography page here. I create fine detailed miniature drawings and paintings on a variety of surfaces including slate, pebbles, rocks, marble, flint, reclaimed wood, sea glass, and a variety of papers including bamboo paper. I have always been fascinated by the tiny details in nature such as moss, lichen, seed heads, water droplets, flower buds and the textures and patterns of tree bark. I use a variety of mediums to create art including graphite, charcoal, pastels, coloured pencil, gouache and acrylic. My favourite medium is graphite. My drawings and paintings range in size from a tiny one inch to A4 size. Whilst I will always create miniature artworks, I do have a series of much larger works in mind which I hope to start soon. Watch this space! I am a self taught artist and learnt mostly through experimenting and creating art as often as possible. I am on a perpetual learning curve. There are always new ideas to explore and new ways of creating. I enjoy experimenting with new mediums and I am always on the lookout for new materials to create art with. When I create art, I enter a state of mind which is highly focused and quite meditative. I find drawing particularly calming. Where time goes when I am creating art, I have no idea! Each hour feels like a minute! A day feels like an hour. Whilst my style is realistic, it is not photorealistic, but my interpretation which is usually a combination of what I see and the image that I have in my imagination. For each drawing I prefer to use several photos to achieve accurate anatomy. I prefer to add and/or omit details and sometimes this is not a conscious process. Sometimes my hand gets carried away with my imagination and they do their own thing! I like to use my own photos for inspiration, backgrounds and correct anatomy. Although sometimes, especially for creatures like hares and owls, this is not possible, so I will use photo sharing sites such as Pixabay and Unsplash. Occasionally, when I see an image that is so perfect, I cannot resist to create an artwork using just the one photo and in this case the photographer will always be given credit in the caption. I draw everything freehand and by eye. Each season brings an abundance of inspiration. I particularly love the springtime when the trees burst into bloom, there are baby animals and birds everywhere and the smell of bluebells and wild garlic hangs in the air! Summer is great for watching the young animals and birds play and explore their new world. Flowers are in abundance, my favourites to draw being poppies, sunflowers, and meadowsweet. I love to draw animals in their natural habitat. Nature is so complex and magnificent, the wonders are endless and never cease to amaze. The greatest artist in the world really is nature. I hope that my nature art and photography inspires people to appreciate and enjoy nature and to notice the tiny details in nature that they may not have paid much attention to before. To be so captivated and mesmerised by the tiniest details of nature, observing and absorbing every sight, sound, smell and to feel the abundance of textures and sensations is to be truly in the moment.
